Customer Rating: Summary: Echoing the negatives Comment: I agree with everything Jane Dust, Derek G, and Ezekiel Zabertini had to say. I tried this product based on Consumer Reports, and wish I had not. I also have the issue with MS Windows security update KB954430 reported by Jane. Google "BitDefender KB954430" and read about the others. I've worked in IT for a living and can sympathize with balancing feature content, quality, and market timeliness, but this product is beyond reason in my opinion. This Romanian company has a lot to learn about software quality.

Customer Rating: Summary: Best Value and Ready for Primetime Comment: I just purchased BitDefender Total Security 2009 after evaluating it. The following are my criteria for evaluating security suites and my view on how BitDefender did in each category.
Two comments before starting. First do not skimp on security software. Recently I decided to use a free version of McAfee from my internet provider for about 15 days thinking that it was good enough; my child's computer got infected with something I cannot eliminate. Second, I wanted one package that did everything; I did not want to use Avast free version plus Spybot shareware plus...
My criteria in selecting a security software was:
1. How well does it protect?
2. What are the chances it will work on my computers? All security software bombs on some computers, but some are more likely than others to work. That is why I suggest trying a free 30 day evaluation copy (www.bitdefender.com, and you do not need a credit card). If it works, come back to Amazon to purchase it since it is cheaper here. If it does not work, try something else.
3. How easy is it to use?
4. Does it have extra features to give me near total protection above basic protection? I have B.S. in computer science and have some IT security responsibilities, and I can assure you there is no such thing as total protection.
5. How much does it cost?
I did not include user support since I have never tried contacting any security software companies. Also from my experience, there is very little quality user support on software that costs less then $100.
Bit Defender Total Security I think comes out on top.
1. It has all of the top independent security software certifications, such as West Coast labs and ICSA labs. Not all security software passes all of these tests.
2. It works on my home built XP and Vista 64 computers. Obviously I need to try it on dozens of computers to say for sure, but my gut says odds are good it will work on your computer. Again, try a free evaluation copy.
3. The 2009 version is a radical improvement in ease of use. I bought TrendMicro 2008 since BitDefender 2008 needed work before it offered good basic protection. I find password protection tricky to set up, but the other advanced features are easy to use.
4. You get good protection immediately upon install, but it has advanced features you can set up as time goes on. Besides the password protection, it has a registry cleaner, a file shredder (totally erases deleted files so that others cannot use a utility program to recover them), 2 gb of on-line backup, etc. If you have children, make sure they know about game mode.
5. Except by using multiple "free" software packages (some are shareware or have reduced capabilities), BitDefender is the cheapest quality security software out there.
I think the main criticism about it being "not ready for prime time" does not apply since enough time has occurred since release to work the bugs out. I never buy software until it has been on the market for a while.
Again, try the software before you buy. Some software has better individual features (I think TrendMicro has better antiphishing), but for the money I think this is best.
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy installation-so far so good Comment: My husband has an older PC (about 4 yrs old). My mother-in-law was visiting and went online and we think she may have accidentally clicked some web pages she probably shouldn't have, because we started to get all these pop-up windows that wouldn't go away and it def. seemed like a virus. I installed this product and it was a very easy installation and once it was done, voila, the annoying windows disappeared. The computer had also been running pretty slow before the installation so I'm not sure if it helped remedy that but it was a nice bonus. The program automatically downloads the application to the desktop (you can elect not to do this if you like by simply unchecking a box when it goes thru the options during the installation process) and so it's easy to double click and see the status of your system. I ran a check through the whole computer and it identified and eliminated a couple files that seemed sketchy. There is an option to have it store some key info about your identification so that it can check to make sure websites don't pick up this info. I wasn't sure how that all worked so haven't tried that yet but I'm sure this is why some people would want this product. There also is a way to control the websites younger children can access-my son is still a baby so I haven't needed this but I think it would be helpful for a lot of families. Overall, the software has worked really well for the anti-virus properties and I think for the price it's a good deal to also get the identity theft protection element & the parental control. EDIT: as of a few weeks using the product, it does SLOW DOWN our computer but we do have a very old XP computer (2002) so this probably wouldn't happen if you have a newer model.
Customer Rating: Summary: One of the better anti-virus software programs, but room for improvement. Comment: My computer is a Fujitsu B3010D laptop with a Pentium Mobile 1 GhZ processor and 1 gigabyte of RAM. Recently, I've used the Zone Alarm Security Suite and figured I'd give this one a try because the Zone Alarm software seemed to be a bit of a memory hog.
Bitdefender does not hog resources to the extent that Zone Alarm did, but I do note that pages seem to freeze from time-to-time, and I believe this is because Bitdefender is scanning or updating. It's somewhat frustrating if you're trying to get something done and your computer locks up on you, even if the lockup is only temporary.
I also think that the interface could be improved upon. It's better than many, but different applications require the launching of a new window and I'd rather that didn't occur. Also, when first logging on, the software will often tell you that you have a certain number of problems. Then, the problems will either disappear or else it is not simple to determine what those problems are without clicking on a number of other links. I'd prefer that it did not report any problems until the machine is done booting and then state, essentially, "You have 3 problems and here they are:..."
I haven't encountered any viruses while using this software, so I cannot report how well it performs in that respect. I do note that Bitdefender has won numerous awards, so presumably it handles that task just fine. I very much appreciate some of the other applications that are included, especially the tune-up features.
Overall, I'd say that this is a very good piece of software. However, I feel that it just needs a few tweaks to make it truly excellent. If you are considering buying it, I'd recommend the product. Protecting 3 machines for 2 years is a decent deal at this price. However, while it's good at what it does, do not expect perfection and you won't be disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: APPALLING customer service Comment: Bitdefender Internet Security 2009 2Yr/3Pc
This review echoes what many other seem to think. The product may be good but customer service is shockingly bad. Their documentation is completely inadequate. Their knowledge base is sparse to the point of useless. They NEVER answer their customer service line. It was bad when they had an 800 number, now they have a toll number, so you wait on hold for ever and pay real money to do so. Their email support is barely any better. They make one half-hearted attempt to trouble-shoot, and when that fails, they then send you a canned email about how to "use the tools and submit reports." I can't remember when I last purchased a boutique product like this whose supplier was so cavalier about, and indifferent to, the customer's needs.
